When the pageantry takes a seat the game takes center stage.
No bands. No halftime show. Just football and the Clark Atlanta University cheerleaders keeping the sidelines alive.
With the Mighty Marching Panther band I usually have the benefit of seeing practices beforehand, learning the formations and getting an idea of where I want my camera when certain moments unfold. Football gave me no such advantage. Photographing the game was now an exercise in patience — hoping I was pointed in the right direction at the right time.
I sat on these photos longer than usual, unsure if I had captured anything worth sharing. As I reflected on how I stood inside Panther Stadium sweating, watching and waiting for every frame I could get I realized these photos had earned their way off my memory card and onto somebody’s screen. It took me a little longer to see what I had, but eventually I found the story in what I brought home.
